Within the park of the faculties of medicine and pharmacy of Grenoble (Grenoble Alpes University) and alongside the “Mas de Saint-Ferjus” which houses the administrative building, was created in 2014 the Garden Dominique Villars, doctor and botanist (1745- 1814). The project was designed to serve as an educational garden: a particularly relevant choice for making the link between medicine (care/poison) and plants. Indeed, today nearly 60% of medicines are derived from natural substances, while phytotherapy and aromatherapy are experiencing growing success.
Different tubs bring together a total of nearly 250 plants, divided into seven zones in a magnificent park, and organized in a didactic way according to their therapeutic properties, the pathologies to be treated or their toxic potential.
The visit route allows you to identify various medicinal plants in their habitat area (xerophytic, acidophilic or undergrowth plants, herbaceous field plants) while discovering the history of this former 18th century pleasure property.
Plants heal but plants sometimes poison: 90% of poisonings are due to ornamental plants, affecting especially children. The garden also wishes to make the public aware of the risks of poisoning by ornamental plants via various planted containers, serving as an example.
As a partner of Rendez-vous aux jardins, Binette & Jardin also likes this site for its medieval garden of the 4 humours, a real educational tool for medical and pharmacy students: it brings together 46 medicinal plants with their use according to a treaty. medicine of 1567 based on the humoral theory, elaborated by Hippocrates and the authors of the Corpus Hippocraticum, then by Galen, and which played an important role in the history of Medicine and Pharmacy until the end of the 18th century. “The transmission of knowledge”, the 2021 theme of the Rendez-vous aux jardins event finds its full expression here.

On the occasion of the Rendez-vous aux jardins 2021, two visits will be reserved for schoolchildren on Friday June 4 and two guided tours for the general public will be organized at 2 p.m. on Friday June 4 and at 10 a.m. on Saturday June 5, upon prior registration. Otherwise, each plant has a label with its Latin and common names, its botanical family, the parts of plants used, the therapeutic properties and a QR-code, allowing you to learn a lot.
Note also that a new exhibition, unique in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, is to be discovered in the Garden, entitled “Friends pollinators, welcome to town!”
