Departments and regions: skills that concern gardeners

The department and its skills related to natural areas

Among the different attributions of the department is the protection of natural areas. As such, the departmental advisers are responsible for the management and quality of water, the virtuous management of waste and they ensure health and environmental safety.

They are responsible for the protection of sensitive natural areas in order to preserve biodiversity, and this mission is financed by the development tax well known to garden shed owners. Water is a fragile resource to save, gardeners know it well: they have no choice but to adapt their way of gardening in the face of recurring droughts. But it is also for the department to reduce the risk of floods and floods. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The region and its skills related to land use planning

Spatial planning is one of the major areas of competence of regional authorities, as provided for in the law on the new territorial organization of the Republic (NOTRe law) of 7 August 2015.

The region must have a regional planning, sustainable development and territorial equality plan (Sraddet). This has different aims, including the fight against climate change and air pollution, as well as waste management, all areas that are not without repercussions for citizen gardeners.

The regional natural parks are the responsibility of the regional authorities, which makes it possible to preserve much needed biodiversity.

The regional council also manages European programs which makes it possible to better take into account local needs, particularly in rural areas and in particular allowing sustainable management of natural resources.
