favorite Rendez-vous at the gardens 2022

This Avapessa fruit garden is the work of a passionate gardener, Robert Kranwhich has achieved this, over many years, respecting the work of the land previously carried out by the elders, that is to say in a traditional way, without motorized vehicles, without chemical inputs, in respect of the environment and of biodiversity.

Avapessa fruit garden in Haute-Corse

Motivated by the desire to be able to eat a fruit picked fresh from the tree, at perfect maturity, whatever the time of year, Robert Kran quickly got hooked on the game and his curiosity thus led him to adapt fruit trees usually not cultivated on the island of beauty, with the aim of anticipating the climate change that is foreseen and currently at work. Planting, grafting, cuttings, sowing, with its share of failures but also of successes which make this garden a veritable forest of vigorous fruit trees. Selection is strict: trees that do not naturally resist disease are removed; more resistant varieties – generally grown from seedlings – replace them.

Located in Balagne, in the commune of Avapessa, inland between Île Rousse and Calvi, the fruit botanical garden brings together more than 40 kinds of edible fruit, with many rare varieties from all parts of the country. of the world, with the exception of strictly tropical plants, since light frosts occur in winter. It is difficult to list all the plants that make up this collection, but know that by going there, you will be able to discover: persimmons (40 varieties), fig trees (50 varieties), Aronia, elderberry, Brazilian guava (photo 3), apricot trees, avocado trees, Japanese goumi, dogwoods, olive trees, chestnut trees, pecans, walnut trees, hawthorns, chasteberries, camphor trees, Magellanic cinnamon, Sichuan pepper trees, maritime mertensia, kiwaïs without forgetting, of course, many citrus fruits (pomelos, clementines, lemons…), etc.

As a partner of Rendez-vous aux jardins, Binette & Jardin likes this garden for its anticipation of the variations in the climate, by managing to adapt unusual fruit trees in Corsica, which perfectly embodies the 2022 theme of the Rendez-vous event. to the gardens: “Gardens in the face of climate change”.
