Gabi Fastner shows you the fitness trend of wall yoga

Just lean on it while you exercise? Why not! Yes, you heard right, because in the “wall yoga” fitness trend, the wall serves as a workout aid. Instead of just doing the exercises on a yoga mat or using traditional fitness equipment as training tools, simply find the nearest wall and incorporate it into your workout.

Are you wondering what that should actually look like? In her new workout, fitness expert Gabi Fastner shows a few of her favorite yoga exercises on the wall – and the best thing about these moves: They are suitable for all ages and performance levels!

Yoga on the wall: What’s the point?

Why is yoga on the wall so popular? On the one hand, the wall serves as a support for more difficult balance stances and thus helps you to maintain your balance during certain exercises. On the other hand, it can also have a resistance function, for example if you push yourself against the wall with your arms or legs outstretched when practicing a yoga pose.

The wall is a great tool for both beginners and advanced practitioners, as it provides stability, which in turn ensures that you can stretch more deeply and your flexibility is increased. In addition, the muscles are activated more intensively during the exercises, but at the same time you have to concentrate less on staying stable in individual poses, which makes your training more relaxed. By the way: Pilates can also be practiced excellently on the wall! Find out more about the fitness trend wall Pilates in our article.

Wall yoga with Gabi Fastner: 3 top exercises

Are you interested in giving the fitness trend a chance? Gabi Fastner has some top exercises ready for you in her new workout. Feel free to watch her video on YouTube and join in!

If you’re wondering what to expect from Gabi Fastner’s workout, we’ve taken a closer look at her yoga session. Three of her exercises deserve special attention:

1. Variation of the warrior with raised heel

The warrior position is a classic exercise in yoga. You should definitely try it out as it requires stability, balance and strength from the entire body. However, the yoga posture “Warrior 1” particularly strengthens the leg muscles and stability in the middle of the body, which also has a positive effect on posture. Using the wall as an aid makes it easier to maintain balance during the exercise and the variation in the raised heel makes the standing position more comfortable for the hips and knees, making it particularly suitable for all ages.

  • Stand upright with your back against the wall, both of your pelvic bones pointing forward.
  • Now take a big step forward with one foot, the other foot stays behind the wall with the heel raised. Now stretch both legs out, breathe in, straighten your upper body and stretch your arms in the air above your head. Keep your shoulders low and press your heel firmly against the wall.
  • Now, as you exhale, bend your front leg so that your heel is below your knee. Move your arms down to the sides until they are stretched out at shoulder height and form a T-shape with your upper body. Then breathe in again and come back up.

2. Straddle forward bend against the wall

The straddle forward bend is also one of the most popular yoga exercises because of its positive effect on flexibility. However, since it is not so easy for many people not to form a hunched back, Gabi Fastner shows a variant of the exercise in the video that we didn’t want to withhold from you: She does the exercise lying down against the wall, which means that her back remains straight and yet an excellent stretch in the legs is achieved. This way you are guaranteed to succeed in the straddle forward bend!

  • Lie on your back on the floor, your butt facing the wall. Slide your buttocks as close to the wall as possible so that you can now stretch your legs vertically up along the wall. The arms lie next to the body, the palms face the ceiling. Hold this exercise for a while and feel the stretch in your legs.
  • Now open your legs wide to the side in a straddle position. Let them rest loosely against the wall and feel the stretch in the inside of your legs. Hold this exercise as well.

3. Shoulder and arm stretch on the wall

Of course, the upper body needs to be stretched too! This is particularly important if you spend a lot of time sitting to prevent tension and get better posture. The arms, shoulders and chest are stretched particularly intensively during the “shoulder and arm stretch on the wall”, which is why we have also summarized this exercise for you.

  • Stand sideways against the wall with the leg closer to the wall in front of the other leg and slightly bent while the back leg is straight.
  • Extend the arm that is on the side of the wall straight back. Place your palm flat on the wall. Now turn your upper body away from the wall. Hold the stretch for a while and then switch sides.
