Top 5 waterproof smartwatches for swimming

Smartwatches for swimming measure the duration of training, the distance covered or the number of laps swum, the calories burned and the speed during swimming training. The models in our test differ quite a lot in terms of water resistance. According to the manufacturers, some models can withstand water depths of up to 30 meters, while others can withstand up to 100 meters.

ATM is not a direct indicator of the maximum possible diving depth

The “ATM” value (physical atmosphere) is often used to indicate water protection. This value indicates the maximum possible pressure on the watch case. It should be noted, however, that the ATM value is determined under laboratory conditions and does not reflect the actual conditions when swimming or diving.

For most amateur swimmers, however, this will have little impact. A value of five ATM is usually sufficient in normal swimming conditions – where you are ideally close to the water surface. However, for ambitious athletes and divers, it could be relevant due to fast movements and greater diving depths. In this case, it should be at least ten ATM.

Many waterproof smartwatches are equipped with a special water protection mode. This is activated with the push of a button and flushes out any water that has entered. If you swim in the sea, you should rinse the watch with fresh water after swimming. This protects the strap and display and ensures a longer service life.

The following smartwatches are suitable for normal swimming due to their good protection against water. All models mentioned here have at least five ATM.

For Apple fans

Apple Watch Series 9

As an iPhone owner, you basically can’t avoid the Apple Watch Series 9.

Review: Apple Watch Series 9

If you own an iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 9 is the best choice as a smart swimming tracker. The Apple Watch impresses with its reliable operation and high-quality workmanship, but is anything but cheap.

Before you go into the water, you choose in the training app whether you want to train in open water or in the pool. In addition to the distance, the Apple Watch records the duration of the training, the speed, the calories burned, the swimming style and the laps completed. All of these values are then displayed in a clear summary. During training sessions on land, the heart rate is also usually measured, but due to water possibly entering the required sensor, this function is not guaranteed when swimming.

The Apple Watch is waterproof up to 50 meters, and according to the manufacturer, even long swims in the sea are no problem. There is GPS and a compass on board for orientation. The cellular version, which is also available, even allows you to make phone calls while swimming without having to have an iPhone nearby.

Once you’re out of the water, it’s a good idea to rinse your Apple Watch with fresh water, dry it, and remove any water that might have gotten in. To do the latter, press the side button and the Digital Crown at the same time.

Android alternative

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is an excellent smartwatch for all Android users.

Smartwatch review: Samsung Galaxy Watch 6

The best alternative for Android users is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6. Since it is equipped with five ATM and is marked as waterproof, it can be worn in water without any problems. However, according to the manufacturer, it should not be used for diving or so-called “high-pressure water activities”. Practical: As soon as you get into the water, information about the swimming time, distance covered and swimming style is automatically recorded.

In addition, the so-called “SWOLF value” can be displayed. This is the determination of swimming efficiency, which is derived from the duration and the required number of strokes when swimming (lane).

Before you go into the water with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, make sure to activate the water lock mode in the settings. This deactivates the screen, preventing accidental inputs. The measuring sensors also close so that the device remains protected from possible water ingress.

Particularly stylish

Withings Scanwatch Horizon

If you attach particular importance to the appearance of your smartwatch, you will be fully satisfied here – but you will have to do without a GPS sensor.

Test Top 5 waterproof smartwatches for swimming: Withings Scanwatch Horizon

The Withings Scanwatch Horizon manages to combine elegant looks with suitability for sports. Compared to many other models, the watch stands out due to its particularly high-quality appearance, which is almost reminiscent of a classic wristwatch rather than a smartwatch. But the appearance of the Withings Scanwatch Horizon is not the only special feature. You do not need to activate an app or make any other configurations before you start swimming laps. Shortly after you start a continuous swimming session, the device automatically records data on the duration and calorie consumption.

According to the manufacturer, the watch is protected against water with ten ATM and should therefore be sufficient for most activities in the lake, sea or swimming pool.

The biggest downside: the smartwatch does not have GPS, which means that less information is visible, especially when swimming in open water. In order to see the distance or swimming route, you would have to use an external smartphone, which admittedly could be difficult when swimming. The Withings therefore seems interesting for all those for whom the elegant appearance of the smartwatch is just as important as protection from water. However, you have to be able to do without one or two evaluation data.

Enduring water rat

Amazfit GTR

Long battery life and a subtle design characterize the Amazfit GTR.

Test Top 5 waterproof smartwatches for swimming: Amazfit GTR

The Amazfit GTR is a particularly durable smartwatch. In our test, it stands out with a battery life of 25 days. But the watch not only has a lot to offer under the hood, its exterior also appeals with its simple, elegant design. This means that it cuts a fine figure not only in the pool, but also on land. However, the Amazfit offers fewer features than comparable smartwatches on the market: In addition to the pre-installed apps, no other applications can be installed. What would otherwise be a major point of criticism is less important for a smartwatch for swimming.

When it comes to sports, the Amazfit has nothing to hide from its competitors – it has more than twelve different modes. When swimming, you can choose whether the watch records laps in the pool or the distance in open water swimming. All you have to do is set the length of the pool beforehand.

The evaluation of swimming data is possible thanks to the integrated GPS, but in practice the GPS data is not as reliable as that of most competitors. The manufacturer certifies that the smartwatch is five ATM and water resistant up to 50 meters.

Everyday companion

Huawei Watch GT 4

A classic smartwatch that offers almost everything you could wish for except ECG and LTE.

Test Top 5 waterproof smartwatches for swimming: Huawei Watch GT 4

The Chinese manufacturer Huawei is also swimming in the water-resistant smartwatch sector. The Watch GT 4 is a stylish, swim-proof watch that is one of the cheaper models. Nevertheless, the smartwatch’s portfolio includes a full 100 training programs.

Huawei says that the watch was designed for swimming – special programs are available. Nevertheless, like many other models, the smartwatch only offers five ATM and a water resistance of 50 meters. The Watch GT 4, which is made of stainless steel, is still not suitable for diving. Especially since, according to the manufacturer, it should not stay underwater for longer than ten minutes. You should also take the watch off in “hot waters”.

Huawei offers a wide selection of strap materials. Metal and leather may look elegant, but they don’t tolerate aggressive salt water well.

Once you have put on the band of your choice, there is one more thing left to do: choose whether you want to go into the pool (»indoor«) or open water (»outdoor«). Depending on this, either the lengths are counted or the swimming route is tracked. All evaluations can be viewed in the free »Huawei Health« app. Anyone who was looking forward to ECG and LTE will unfortunately be disappointed. Neither is available on this smartwatch.
